The Black Lake Golf Club in Onaway delivers not only fantastic golf, but a fantastic value as well. And that combination makes sense in
today’s economy now more than ever.

Architect Rees Jones did a masterful job designing the 7,046-yard Black Lake across 300 acres of pristine northern Michigan forest, creating what has always been considered one of the state’s top courses since opening in the spring of 2000. But what most don’t realize is how affordable it is to play.

Golf Digest recently rated Black Lake No. 34 on its list of America’s greatest public courses. When researching green fees of the top 100 courses, the magazine tabbed Black Lake in the top 10 – No. 9 nationally -- for best bang for your buck. Green fees will max out at $85 during peak season in 2010.

Jones crafted 18 distinct holes that could be considered “signature holes” on other courses. The par-3 14th, the “Sahara hole,” is probably the most recognizable with its massive bunker stretching more than 170 yards from the tees to the green.

“The holes were here, we just had to find them,” Jones said. “We strive for holes blending with the natural terrain. There is nothing artificial or contrived at Black Lake. We were trying to build an old-style course. You’ll notice we don’t have mounds or moguls.  We just have sweeps and natural grades.”

The course, certified by Audubon International under its Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System, a program designed to protect wildlife and preserve natural resources, is virtual haven for wildlife with fox, deer, coyote, beaver, turkey and owl roaming about.

The facility was built for all ages and abilities. With few forced carries, Black Lake is considered one of the best courses nationally for women. The Little Course, a nine-hole par-3 is a perfect spot for juniors or beginners to get a better feel for the game.

The practice facility features a 350-yard double sided range, four practice bunkers and four chipping and putting greens. It is a great place for the Black Lake Golf Academy which offers a wide variety of golf schools and instruction. The schools have a 3 to 1 student teacher ratio to ensure a lot of individual attention. Under the direction of PGA Master Professional Pam Phipps and highlighted by LPGA Tour and Two Time British Open Champion Debbie Massey, the philosophy of the teaching staff is to make learning fun while improving the students game.

Black Lake has more to offer than golf, a full service bar and grille that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Everything on the menu is great, but the house prides itself on the fresh fish. Additionally, lodging is available on Black Lake and a variety of golf packages are offered. For more information, visit blacklakegolf.com or call 989-733-4653.
